Interview.

Hello world,

I had an interview with Mr Kelvin, CEO of ShanG, and he said that it wasn’t easy to find a designer who understands the concept of a name card being a work of art. It’s the second most important thing that a stranger notices after scrutinizing you for the first time.

Mr W.:
Why do you think it’s important to have a good name card?

Kelvin:
The name card is like a portable billboard for the company. Try writing your name on a blank piece of paper and giving it to your clients, you’ll see what I mean.

Mr W.:
So what’s up with ShanG nowadays? Any good news to share with us?

Kelvin:
As a matter of fact, yes. I’m currently negotiating with NUS School of Business, to be a sponsor for their upcoming annual event – the Jam and Hop 2009. It’s the biggest annual event organized by the School of Business and ShanG is definitely pleased to be a part of such an event.

We are slowly but surely setting the foundations for the magazine, I’m in no hurry to launch my magazine. But I want to assure the readers that when it is ready to be launched, they will not be disappointed. I have a great team of individuals working for me at ShanG, each committed and motivated to bring the best out of Fashion and tirelessly unearthing potential shopping spots where you never knew existed.

I’m also in talks with Fr3b.com (http://www.Fr3b.com) to form a partnership. Their co-founder, Ms Elfaine Tan, is a young lady in her 20s and I heard about the website from my Managing Director, Sharon. She told me about this website that offered free samples to poeple who were interested in the products but wished to try them before buying.

I was confident that our collaboration would be a positive one upon meeting with her. With ShanG being an online male fashion magazine and with Fr3b.com with us, walking side by side, I am certain it will increase the exposure of both companies, taking us to new horizons.

Mr W.:
So what is ShanG (尚) all about? and why the name?

Kelvin:
ShanG (尚) is an upcoming local online male fashion magazine. The idea was born one fine random evening in Year 2008, after a chat with my elder sister. I wouldn’t exactly call it brainstorming but we were toying with the idea of setting up a business and tossing up some very crazy ideas. I happened to be looking around when I spotted a female magazine on the coffee table and it just hit me. Why not a male fashion magazine?

After the conversation, I went back to my room with this idea and considering its feasibility. To me, this idea was interesting and fresh and so I embarked on my market survey. I got some pretty good responses, so in Jan 2009, I went ahead and set up my company, VisiaSG -  derived from the words “Visual” and “Singapore”. Whatever you set your eyes on – fashion, food, graphic arts and anything beautiful, I want to draw it out from Singapore.

The name, ShanG (尚), actually stands for “Fashion” in Mandarin, and if you haven’t noticed, it not only stands for fashion but it is also the chinese character for monks (和尚). Ever wondered who designed the robes for the monks?

Show anyone on the street a robe, and their first thought would be – Monks.

And this is the exact reaction I want our readers in Singapore to have.

“Wanna know more about Fashion?” The first thought  is ShanG (尚).

Mr W.:
Cool.. I’m sure starting something like this wouldn’t be easy. Have you met with any obstacles so far? If so, how do you find the solutions?

Kelvin:
Of course I have! Just like any other young entrepreneur trying to start a business, people tend to take you less seriously just because you are young and your company is young and by their standards, equipped with less business experiences. It’s just so stereotypical! It can be rather infuriating but I’m rising above the criticism and changing their minds with my professionalism.

Apart from these, setting up the team was a nightmare. People were backing out due to cold feet, leaving me to start searching for talents all over again. It caused quite a delay with the execution of plans. But, I’m proud to say that we’re beyond that now and I’ve got a great team with me now. We’ve roughed it out and we’re still stuck together.

It helps to be a calm individual too. Being the head, I need to make a lot of major decisions. I need both guts and foresight when making them. If any of it fails, I too have to take the responsibility.

Mr W.:
Sounds tough.. Alright! This is the last question for now. Everyone’s been asking.. When is the launch?!

Kelvin:
For now, the tentative date is set at July the 4th.

But like I said, there is no point rushing and giving the readers a substandard piece of work. I believe in quality, so if there is another delay, I only ask my readers to be patient with me and my team :) It will be worth it.
